Glutathione (70-18-8, Glutathione) is a tripeptide composed of three amino acids (cysteine, glutamate and glycine) present in most mammalian tissues. Glutathione acts as an antioxidant, free radical scavenger and detoxifier. Glutathione, as a cofactor for glutathione peroxidase, is also important in the uptake of amino acids and the synthesis of leukotrienes. As a substrate for glutathione S-transferase, glutathione reacts with a variety of harmful chemicals such as halides, epoxides and free radicals to form harmless inert products. In red blood cells, these reactions prevent oxidative damage by reducing methemoglobin and peroxides.
