Decorating with Pillar Candles   Pillar candles are typically used for decorating. They make a great accent that will go with any décor. Some people never burn their pillars, but many people do. If you’re like me, you probably have some pillars that you burn and some that you don’t. If you are just using pillar candles for decoration, try clumping them together while mixing sizes. Put the tallest pillar in the middle. It’s easier to keep the candles the same color, but mixing the colors can create a nice look, especially in neutral colors. I like to mix solid colors with multi colored pillars such as those with a crystalline effect. Try decorating your pillar candles with decorative ribbon that you can buy at Wal-Mart or any craft store. Not only can you tie a ribbon around a single pillar, but try clumping a group of three individual square shaped pillars of varying heights and tie the ribbon around all three. If you have a fireplace, there are many fireplace candle holders on the market that you can place your pillars on to decorate during the warmer months. Try a decorative ceramic dish about two or three inches deep such as those used to hold potted plants, or simply use a platter, fill it with decorative stones, and push the pillars down into the stones. This also makes a safe holder for burning the pillar. Burning Pillar Candles If you have a candle, why not burn it! Some pillars are unscented and are burned solely for atmosphere. Other pillars are scented and can add another touch to that atmosphere. If you are planning on burning a scented pillar, buy one that is shrink-wrapped in plastic so that much of the scent is not lost by the time you get the candle. One of the differences between paraffin and soy pillars is that a paraffin pillar will mushroom on the edges as is burns down. A soy pillar will burn a clean cylinder all the way down the candle leaving the outside intact. This has a nice look but you will need long matches or a long lighter to reach the wick once the candle is burned close to the bottom. If you are burning pillars which are clumped together, try to leave a little space between each one because the flame from one can melt the candles next to it. This is another advantage of soy pillars since they leave the outsides intact.
