Mucuna pruriens extract, accoriding to wikipedia, is an annual, climbing shrub with long vines that can reach over 15 m in length. Mucuna Pruriens has many other names, such as Velvet Bean, Cowitch, cowhage, Werepe, Karara, Agbara,etc. Mucuna pruriens, one of the popular Ayurvedic herbs, contains L-Dopa, a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine. Mucuna has been used for generations in India for Parkinson's disease. L-dopa converts into dopamine, an important brain chemical involved in mood, sexuality, and movement.
Constituents of Mucuna pruriens extract There are many ingredients in mucuna pruriens, while L-dopa is the main content that we care about. Mature seeds contain typically 3.1-6.1% Levodopa, although up to 12.5% has been recorded. The leaves tend to contain around 0.5%.   How does Mucuna pruriens extract work? Mucuna pruriens extract contains levodopa (L-dopa), which is used to treat Parkinson's disease. L-dopa is changed to the chemical dopamine in the brain. Symptoms of Parkinson's disease occur in patients due to low levels of dopamine in the brain. Unfortunately, most L-dopa is broken down in the body before it ever reaches the brain unless special chemicals are used with levodopa. These chemicals are not present in Mucuna pruriens extract. L-DOPA from mucuna pruriens has been shown to be safer and more effective for controlling Parkinson's disease than the pharmaceutical drugs Levodopa and Carbidopa. This is because the vast array of other chemical constituents that accompany L-DOPA in the unprocessed plant also play a role in its ability to manage Parkinson's disease.
