ASTM A403 WP316L-WX Stainless Steel BW Equal Tee in Large Size and Thick Wall

ASTM A403 Abstract

The ASTM A403 standard covers the specifications for austenitic stainless steel fittings used in pressure piping applications. These fittings can be made from forgings, bars, plates, or seamless/welded tubular products. Various processes like hammering, pressing, extruding, bending, welding, machining, etc., can be used to shape the fittings. Heat treatment is required for all fittings.

The ASTM A403 WP316L specification specifically focuses on the same requirements but applies to fittings made from wrought austenitic stainless steel, with the inclusion of the grade designation WP316L.

Chemical and product analyses shall be performed and shall conform to the required chemical composition in carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, molybdenum, and titanium. Tension test shall be done on the fitting material to determine the tensile properties such as yield strength and tensile strength. Fittings supplied under this specification shall be examined visually for surface discontinuities, surface checks, and mechanical marks.

Fitting Classes for WP Grades

CR	Corrosion resistant grade. S through WU Classes do not apply.
WP-S	Seamless
WP-W	Welded, RT or UT all pipe starting material welds made with filler metal. All fitting manufacturer welds except as excluded in A/SA403 paragraph 5.4.3. If UT is substituted for RT, all welds must be examined 100% for their length as required by A/SA403 paragraph 5.6
WP-WX	RT all welds with or without filler metal.
WP-WU	UT all welds with or without filler metal.
WP grade-grade-class	Insert grades (304-304L) and class (S,W,WX, or WU). Applies to fittings meeting all chemical and physical requirements of both grades.
