Spinal anesthesia (or spinal anesthesia), also called spinal analgesia, spinal block or sub-arachnoid block (SAB), is a form of regional anaesthesia involving injection of a local anaesthetic into the subarachnoid space, generally through a fine needle. For extremely obese patients longer needles are available. The tip of the spinal needle has a pencile point or quincke bevel. Recently, pencil point needles have been made available (Whitacre, Sprotte, Gertie Marx & others).

Spinal anaesthetic needle with short bevel "Quincke" type with transparent hub and stylet.

• Ergonomic design of the hub to ensure easy handling and insertion

• The hub of the stylet is fitted with a lug to indicate the bevel orientation and to easily reposition the stylet within the needle in case of necessity

• The hub of the stylet is also color coded according to the diameter of the needle

• Some needles are supplied without introducer; other needles are supplied with a metallic introducer needle to limit the risk of bending / kinking of the Quincke needle and the risk of deviation of the needle tip

• The “pencil point” bevel minimizes damage to the dura mater and CSF leakage

• Eye close to the distal tip to minimize the risk of extra-dural injection of the anaesthetic

• Check the spinal needle to ensure the stylet slides in and out easily. Recheck your landmarks and make sure the patient's position has not shifted. Warn the patient that a feeling of pressure or an odd sensation in the back may occur.

• When using the standard cutting needle, insert the needle at the identified site with the bevel facing upward (if the patient is in the left or right lateral position). The bevel is thus directed in the horizontal plane (parallel to the axis of the spine) ensuring that the bevel is parallel to the dural fibres.

•  Sterile if the package is sealed and undamaged.

•  Discard safely after single use.
