PCM based cold chain refrigerants use specially developed, bio-based products made from salt hydrates or paraffin materials. These provide consistency of energy storage at various temperatures unlike ice, which occurs only at 0C (32F). PCMs’ store as much volumetric latent heat energy as frozen water.

How does PCM work?

Each solution has a defined temperature at which it changes state between solid and liquid. These have specific amounts of thermal energy that are absorbed, while solidifying and released, while liquefying. During this process, they maintain their constant level of phase change temperature. The graph above shows each product at it's phase-change temperature. For example, PCM-HS34P is liquefied by heating it to a temperature up to 50 degrees Celsius. As it cools, the temperature of the PCM drops to the level of phase-change and stabilizes until it completely solidifies.
