Nice color.       Product Overviews         What is Magnolia officinalis?   Magnolia officinalis (commonly called houpu magnolia or  magnolia-bark) is a species of Magnolia native to the mountains and valleys of China at altitudes of 300–1500 m. Magnolia offcinalis, a Chinese medicinal herb, has long been used for the relief of fever, headache, anxiety,  diarrhoea, stroke, and asthma. Magnolol, one of the compounds isolated from Magnolia offcinalis, acts on the  central nervous system, inhibits platelet coagulation and lymphocyte proliferation, and is an anti-inflammatory  agent and smooth muscle relaxant. The bark contains magnolol and honokiol, two polyphenolic compounds that have been demonstrated as  peroxisome  proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) agonists and GABAA modulators. Preclinical studies have evaluated their various potential applications including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antimicrobial properties.   What is Magnolol?   Magnolol is an organic compound that is classified as lignan. It is a phenolic component extracted from the root  and stem bark of Magnolia officinalis (Chinese name: Houpo), or in M. grandiflora. The compound exists at the  level of a few percent in the bark of species of magnolia, the extracts of which have been used in traditional  Chinese and Japanese medicine. It has multiple pharmacological effects, such as antioxidant, antithrombotic,  antimicrobial, antiallergic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, xanthine oxidase inhibition, muscle relaxant activity,  anxiolytic and central depressant effects.   What is Honokiol?   Honokiol is a lignan isolated from the bark, seed cones, and leaves of trees belonging to the genus Magnolia.  It has been identified as one the chemical compounds in some traditional eastern herbal medicines along with  magnolol, 4-O-methylhonokiol, and obovatol. What’s the function of Magnolia Extract?   Honokiol and magnolol,the main constituents of Magnolia officinalis, have multiple pharmacological effects,  such as antitumor, antioxidant,  antimicrobial, antiallergic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic and  other antiatherosclerosis-related effects.   1) Weight loss Magnolia Bark is getting much press as a "cortisol", the stress hormone-lowering supplement. Cortisol has also been associated with weight gain (particularly fat in the abdominal area), sugar control problems, memory problems, and a host of other stress induced disorders.   2) Anxiety Magnolia bark shows promise for anxiety relief, according to a 1999 study published in the Journal of Pharmacy  and Pharmacology. In tests on mice, scientists determined that honokiol extracted from magnolia bark may help  reduce anxiety without triggering the side effects associated with diazepam (a drug commonly used in the  treatment of anxiety disorders).   3) Alzheimers Disease Magnolia has several powerful effects on acetylcholine levels in the brain, offering potential benefits for victims  of Alzheimer's Disease. Alzeimer's Disease is characterised by insufficient levels of acetylcholine, accompanied  by the buildup of amyloid plaque in the brain, disrupting normal brain functioning. Two biphenolic compounds  found in Magnolia, Honokiol and magnolol, increase choline acetyltransferase activity, inhibit acetylcholinesterase,  promote potassium-induced acetylcholine release and exhibit neurotrophic function in in vitro studies. Choline  acetyltransferase is an enzyme involved in the cellular synthesis of acetylcholine, an increase of which can  up-regulate the production of acetylcholine necessary for proper brain function. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, the inhibition of which preserves available acetylcholine. Honokiol and Magnolol also exhibited neurotropic effects in vitro, which could translate into enhanced brain cell growth and reduced brain cell death in vivo.   4) Bad Breath Magnolia bark may help fight bad breath, suggests a small study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food  Chemistry in 2007. For the study, nine healthy volunteers were given either Listerine mouthwash or a mint containing  magnolia bark after eating lunch. Tests on saliva samples showed that magnolia bark was effective in destroying  several types of bacteria known to cause bad breath.   5) Asthma Glucocorticoids are effective  anti-asthma agents and may directly modulate airway smooth muscle contraction, augment smooth muscle relaxation and inhibit smooth muscle proliferation, as well as preventing the release and/or activity of several cytokines and other pro-inflammatory mediators. The study suggests that some of these effects of Magnolia officinalis may be due to its stimulatory effect on corticosterone secretion by the adrenal gland, which, in turn, mimics the action of exogenous glucocorticoids in the treatment of asthma. ---Seu-Mei Wang, et al. (2000) Magnolol stimulates steroidogenesis in rat adrenal cells. British Journal  of Pharmacology, 131, 1172-1178.   6) Antiepileptic Magnolol exhibits depressant effects on the CNS, to suppress the incidence of spike discharge, to inhibit tonic extensor  convulsions and death produced by an intracerebroventricular injection of penicillin G potassium and to increase the  threshold of  NMDA-induced seizures. These observations indicate that magnolol might have a potent antiepileptic effect. The antiepileptic effect of magnolol was antagonized by flumazenil, suggesting that the antiepileptic effect of magnolol might be mediated by the GABAA/ benzodiazepine receptor complex and that magnolol may be a potential therapeutic agent for epilepsy.
