Natural safety Nomex offers protection from all kinds of heat: fire, radiant heat, electric arcs, molten metals and flash fires. The most important goal of protective clothing is to prevent the skin from burns. After all, the skin is the body’s Largent and most sensitive organ.     The best heat protection fiber Permanent flame resistance Outstanding comfort Environmentally friendly The skin - the body's most important organ People in professions involving a high level of risk from burns need to wear special protective clothing. Apart from direct fire, heat, in its different forms, represents a significant danger. Skin is our largest organ and its only form of protection is our clothing. These garments have to protect the person against small metal splashes, the short flame contact and against the radiant heat.   It also defines some minimum parameters that fabrics have to comply, regarding the tear resistance, molten splashes, seams and the electric resistance.   This standard classifies the garment or the fabric in two protection levels depending on the drops of molten metal that the fabric may hold before the temperature of the calorimeter increases 40oK.        NFPA 2112   Standard on Flame-Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire specifies the minimum performance requirements and test methods for flame-resistant fabrics and components and the design and certification requirements for garments for use in areas at risk from flash fires.        NFPA 70E   NFPA 70E: Electrical Safety in the Workplace is a standard of the National Fire Protection Association that addresses electrical safety requirements for employees. Anyone who may be in danger of experiencing an arc flash or flash fire, which includes, but is not limited to: oil workers, refinery, chemical, petrochemical, manufacturing, electricians, linemen, welders, miners and more.   What is Primary and Secondary Personal Protection? This can be misleading. Primary Personal Protection Equipment is PPE which is your primary protection from a hazard and is meant to be taken off when the hazard does not exist. An example of Primary PPE is a welder’s helmet. In contrast, Secondary Personal Protection Equipment is PPE which you always have on, regardless if there is an immediate hazard or not. Secondary PPE is your last line of defense if an accident were to occur. Flame Resistant garments are considered secondary PPE because you always have them on regardless if there is or is not a pending incident.   Can I wear a non-FR jacket over my flame resistant PPE? Your outermost layer should also be flame resistant. Under some conditions it is possible to wear 100% cotton (non-FR) garments under your flame resistant garments, however, it is exceedingly important that you do not wear any synthetic materials under flame resistant garments. You should also avoid non-FR or synthetic accessories outside of your garments.   What standards should I be looking for in FR clothing? All FR garments sold in the US or Canada should meet NFPA 2112 and/or CGSB 155.20 and should have a hang tag in the back of the neck stating what standards the garment meets. If there is no tag, the garment fails to meet the any standards and caution should be taken when considering your purchase.
