Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide (MW: average 20,000) found mainly in various species of brown algae and brown seaweed such as mozuku, kombu, bladderwrack,has remarkable biological properties. Numerous studies have shown that fucoxanthin has considerable potential and promising applications in human health. Now Fucoidan that extracted from Fucus vesiculosus is available commercially in the marketis and used as an ingredient in some dietary supplement products.

The Source:

Fucus vesiculosus, known by the common name bladder wrack or bladderwrack, is a seaweed found on the coasts of the North Sea, the western Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, also known by the common names black tang, rockweed, bladder fucus, sea oak, black tany, cut weed, dyers fucus, red fucus, and rock wrack. It was the original source of iodine, discovered in 1811, and was used extensively to treat goitre, a swelling of the thyroid gland related to iodine deficiency.

Most kelp possess high concentration of iodine, therefore ,they have been used to treat goiter, an enlargement of the thyroid gland caused by a lack of iodine, since ancient time .
