What are the main nutrients in goji berries?
There are several important
types of nutrients in wolfberry:
1. Wolfberry signature
nutrient is Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides (LBP). Chinese researchers have put
much attention on focusing on LBP for past 30 years. There have been 1000
papers related to LBP which might be good source for modulating immunity and
anti-oxidant compounds.
2. The carotenoids and
zeaxanthin rich in goji berries which provide essential nutrients for the eyes.
Dr. Dietmar Breithaupt and his research team have found that goji berries
contains almost exclusively zeaxanthin (ca. 150mg /100grams). Goji berries also
contain between 26,000 and 28,000 IU/100g beta-carotene.
3. Goji berries contain 19
amino acids including all 8 essential amino acids (amino acids which must be
obtained from food). More than half of the amino acids are free or water
soluble, and can be directly utilized by the body.
4. Besides the above three
main nutrients, wolfberry also has about 20 trace minerals, fiber, protein
(about 11%-13%), Betaine, Flavonoids, Vitamins A, B, C, etc.
What
kind of eye conditions will wolfberry improve?
Chinese medicine uses
wolfberry to treat or prevent visual degeneration, such as cataracts,
retinopathy, or age related macular degeneration. One report from the
Department of Ophthalmology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong demonstrated
that carotenoids in wolfberry had a high affinity for the retina.
Affinity means the nutrients in wolfberry showed a high concentration in the
retina after ingestion and absorption by the body. Another study on 44 patients
with diabetic retinopathy showed that wolfberry significantly improved
conditions that cause retinopathy.
