A bias tire is characterized by its diagonal ply construction. Typically bias tires are built using nylon, or other fabric, cord, run at 30 degree diagonals, overlapping each other, from the bead. The result is a carcass that is typically very tough- but also heavy, and rougher riding. Because of their weight and rolling resistance, bias ATV tires also sap some horsepower from your quad and typically use more fuel than a radial equivalent.   Tire Specifications:

The 25 in this example refers to the overall height of the tire in inches. The middle number (10.50 in our example), would be 10.5 inches wide. The third number is the diameter of the rim in inches (12" in this case). If the tire were a radial construction, the dash after the middle number would be replaced by an "R."   What do the stars on my sidewall mean?   Most ATV tires will come with a stamp on their sidewall with either a ply rating (usually 2, 4 or 6) or star rating. Either way, a one star is equivalent to a 2 ply rated tire, a 2 star is equivalent to a 4 ply tire, and a three star is equivalent to a 6 ply rated ATV tire. So, what do the plies mean? They simply refer to the weight carrying capacity of the tire and the toughness of its carcass. A two ply, or one star tire, will have the lowest load capacity of the three, and typically the least robust carcass. A 6 ply is the opposite, having the most weight carrying capacity and (usually) the toughest construction of an ATV tire.   Does size really matter?   Well, yes - and no. The most significant improvement when looking to upsize your ATV tires is ground clearance. A taller tire simply lifts your quad or UTV higher off the ground, making it easier to traverse large rocks, roots, stumps and anything else that might be in your path. A taller ATV tire is not always better, however. The taller tire also raises your ATV's center of gravity, making it harder to keep balanced in turns, and typically less precise. This is why sport bikes almost always feature a low profile, shorter tire. A bigger tire also is likely heavier, and harder for your quads engine to turn. What about wider tires? Here again it depends. In mud for example, a wider tire might be better by increasing its flotation and adding biting edges. On a heavy ATV, though, this might work against you, so you may want to stay with a taller, more narrow tire that can seek traction at the bottom (if there is one!) of the mud. This is a scenario where you really have to think about how you use your ATV, and decide whether or not it makes sense to upsize your bikes shoes.   When to go bigger or smaller?   Almost all ATV's have the space available to put bigger tires, without making additional modifications. How much change is possible varies greatly according to your machine. The Kawasaki Mule, for example, allows for very little room to put on bigger tires.
