Injection molding is used to make many things such as spools, packaging, car dashboards, game consoles, pocket combs, some Musical Instruments (and their parts), one-piece chairs and small tables, and mechanical parts (including gears). Injection molding is the most common modern method of making parts; It is ideal for producing a large number of identical objects. The material for the part is fed into a heated barrel, mixed, and forced into the die cavity, where it cools and hardens into the cavity configuration. After the product is designed, usually by an industrial designer or engineer, the mold is precisely machined with metal (usually steel or aluminum) by the die maker (or tool maker) to form the desired part's characteristics. Injection molding is widely used to make all kinds of parts.
Since the materials we use shrink when cooled, special consideration should be given to changes in dimensional tolerances during machining and development. ABS: High temperature, chemical and impact resistance, tensile strength between 61000-6,500 psi.
PEEK: FDA-approved generic material commonly used in place of metal. Provides high chemical resistance at high temperatures, resistance to autoclaving, and maintains good wiring harness, stiffness, and strength.
Acrylic thermoplastic: provides excellent weather resistance and UV fading resistance. They are characterized by high tensile strength and scratch resistance. Acrylic is also available in FDA-approved grades for food and medical applications.
