Description

 

The tester consists of a small (70 mm) glass tube containing yellow chemicals which turn green in the presence of alcohol. The length of the green colour change is in proportion to the amount of alcohol. The tube has an arrow indicating the direction in which the breath must be passed - and also a red calibration line indicating the legal driving limit. Inside the tube on either side of the yellow chemicals is a filling of white crystals and both ends of the tube are closed by a plastic snap-off end-cap. Each tester is accompanied by a plastic bag containing a neck valve - which measures the volume of breath passed through the tester.

 

 

Method of operation

 

To conduct a test, a person must break off the snap-off end caps at both ends of the tester and shake out the harmless white crystals inside the tube. The plastic measuring bag must then be inflated by blowing in one steady breath into the neck of the bag. The valve in the neck of the bag automatically closes after inflation. The tester is then inserted into the neck of the bag and the contents of the bag squeezed through the tester.

Results can be read after one minute.

 

 

Calibration.

 

Testers are made up to any required calibration indicating the legal driving limit either in blood or breath concentrations.

Unless otherwise specified the European specifications as contained in the French Special Regulations NF227 for chemical testers are used as the basis for calibration. These use a correlation coefficient of 1:2100 between blood and breath alcohol concentrations - and a “dead space” volume of 250 ml.

 

 

Accuracy 

 

Certified to the specifications of the CE Special Regulations for alcohol testers - a minimum of 96% of testers must pass specified accuracy tests above and below the calibration level.

 

 

Purpose and use.

 

The testers are designed to detect the presence of alcohol in the human body by testing the breath - and to indicate if the alcohol content  is above or below a specified limit. The product is specifically designed to be sufficiently accurate for use as a screening device - and inexpensive enough to be affordable for police screening or personal self checking. It is NOT designed for high precision accuracy - and should not be compared against the performance specifications of devices used for legal evidence.

 

Please note that any laboratory testing of these chemical testers should be done with reference to specifications used for chemical based fixed volume testers only - and not measured against continuous blow type devices.
